Live Photo off vs converting to a still: what saves space?

The short answer

Switching the Live effect off in the Photos edit screen turns the photo into a still of its key photo, but it doesn’t save storage and you can switch it back on. According to CleverFiles, a true conversion to a regular still can’t be undone. Convert only after you’re sure.

How to do it

  1. Try the reversible way first

Open the Live Photo in Photos, tap Edit, then tap the LIVE button at the top of the screen to turn the Live feature off. You can turn it back on any time.

  2. Convert if you want the space

To remove the motion, convert the photo. In PicWay, tap the level on the compression card on the Set aside page and choose Keep one frame.

  3. Check the result, then delete the original

Compare before and after. Space is only freed once you delete the original Live Photo, not before.

What does the Live button in Photos actually do?

In the Photos edit screen, tapping the Live button turns off the Live feature, and the Live Photo becomes a still of its key photo (Apple). A third-party guide notes this saves no storage, and you can switch back to Live whenever you like (CleverFiles).

MethodSaves space? Can you get the motion back?
Live effect off in Photos editNoYes, switch it back on
Converted to a new still fileYes, once the original is deletedNo (per CleverFiles)

The second row is from CleverFiles, which says that if you converted a Live Photo to a regular still, you can’t restore the Live effect.

Does the still lose quality?

CleverFiles says that with its tool, the duplication method, or the Shortcuts method, the still keeps its original resolution and quality (CleverFiles). In PicWay, you can compare before and after before you delete the original.

Will deleting the original Live Photo delete the new still?

CleverFiles says converted stills are separate files, so deleting the original Live Photos doesn’t affect the new copies. In PicWay, when you delete, the original is removed and the still stays.

Is conversion the same as compression?

No. In PicWay, Compress Live Photo stays a Live Photo, with a smaller photo and motion. Convert to still photo removes the motion and keeps only the still.
