How to organize kids photos on iPhone

The short answer

To organize kids photos on iPhone, start with the near-copies. In PicWay, Similar photos and bursts are sorted into groups, and you pick what to keep from each. Then add a tag, such as your child’s name, to the moments you want to find again, and search by date, place, or tag. Nothing is deleted until you confirm.

How to do it

  1. Open Similar photos

On the Memories tab, tap Similar photos under Next up. Don’t see the card? Scroll down to More ways to tidy, tap View all, then tap Similar photos under Smart tidy.

  2. Keep the best shot of each moment

PicWay puts what it thinks is the best shot first, and you choose. Tap Keep on a photo to mark it, then tap the button below to keep what you marked. To keep everything, tap Keep all. To keep nothing, tap Set all aside.

  3. Clean up bursts

Back on the Memories tab, tap Clean up bursts under Next up if you see it. The card shows up when your library has burst groups.

  4. Tag the moments you want to find again

On the Photos tab, touch and hold a photo and tap Add tags. Type a tag, such as your child’s name or first steps, and confirm. Later, search for that tag.

  5. Review what you set aside, then decide

Open the Set aside page and look through the photos once more. Tap Put back on any you want to keep. If you delete several at once, PicWay asks you to confirm first, and then iOS asks you to confirm.

Why do kids photos pile up so fast?

You take ten shots of one smile and keep all ten. A parent on r/NewParents wrote that they often snap 8–10 quick photos at once, more than half of them blurry, and go back later to keep only the best few from each set. Another parent on r/Parenting wrote that with 6,000+ photos of their two-year-old, it takes forever to find one specific moment. Those are single posts, not survey results.

Both problems have separate fixes: cut each set of near-copies down to one, then make the keepers easy to find.

How do I find one moment later?

You can add your own tags. Touch and hold a photo in your library, tap Add tags, and type a tag. A tag is text you choose: a name, a nickname, or “first steps”. A tag can be 1–32 characters, and each photo can have up to 24. To find the photo, search for the tag.

Search also takes a date, or two dates joined by a hyphen, and a place. When you search a place, PicWay shows journeys first. All searches run on your iPhone.

If you only remember roughly when it happened, the bottom bar on the Photos tab also lets you switch to Time.

What about Live Photos of my kids?

A Live Photo records what happens 1.5 seconds before and after you take the picture, according to Apple’s Live Photos guide. If your kid’s videos and Live Photos fill your storage, PicWay gives you a few choices:

Compress Live PhotoStill a Live Photo. The photo and the motion both get smaller.
Convert to still photoRemoves the motion and keeps the still.
Compress photoSmaller, and may lose some detail.

Will I lose anything by tidying?

Photos you set aside stay in your library until you review them and confirm deleting. If you delete several at once, PicWay first asks you to confirm in the app, and then iOS asks you to confirm.
