Too many screenshots? How to find your real photos on iPhone

The short answer

To find your real photos when screenshots take over your iPhone camera roll, hide the clutter instead of deleting it. On iOS 18 and later, the Photos app can hide screenshots under View Options. PicWay goes further: in its Photos tab, switch from All to Life to hide screenshots, screen recordings, animated images, and images not taken with a camera whose text looks like a receipt, ID or document. Nothing is deleted, and you can fix any photo with a long press.

How to do it

  1. Open the Photos tab

Open PicWay and go to the Photos tab, where the All grid shows your whole library.

  2. Switch from All to Life

Tap the All | Life switch at the top. Screenshots, screen recordings, animated images, and images not taken with a camera whose text looks like a receipt, ID or document step aside, and a note at the top says how many are hidden.

  3. Fix any it gets wrong

Touch and hold a photo in the grid, then tap Remove from Life or Add to Life. It moves right away.

  4. Go back to everything

Tap Show in the note at the top, or switch back to All. Nothing was deleted.

Why can’t I find my photos on iPhone?

Your camera roll mixes everything in one grid: the trip, the dog, and also every screenshot, saved receipt, screen recording and GIF. They aren’t photos you took to remember, but they push the ones you did take further down. The more you screenshot, the longer you scroll.

Deleting them all isn’t always the answer. A screenshot of a recipe or a boarding pass can still be useful. What you want is to see your photos without them, and keep them for later.

Can the iPhone Photos app hide screenshots?

Yes, on iOS 18 and later. In the Photos app, open View Options and tap Screenshots to hide them from your library. On iOS 26 and later, View Options is under the Sort and Filter button. On iOS 18, swipe down on the photo grid and tap the Filter button. The same menu can also hide From My Mac and Shared with You items (Apple’s guide).

The Photos app also has Utilities, which collects identity documents, receipts, handwriting, illustrations and QR codes so you can find them (Apple’s guide).

What does PicWay’s Life view hide?

In PicWay’s Photos tab, switching from All to Life hides:

  • Screenshots
  • Screen recordings
  • Animated images (GIFs)
  • Images that weren’t taken with a camera and whose text looks like a receipt, ID or document

Photos you took with the camera stay in Life, however much text is in them. When PicWay isn’t sure, the photo stays in Life. If it gets one wrong, touch and hold it and tap Add to Life or Remove from Life. More on the Life view.

Life only changes the grid in the Photos tab. Album pages and search still show everything.

Will screenshots show up in my memories?

Not by default. No screenshots or documents in memories is on by default, so Moments, Review, On This Day and widgets leave out screenshots, screen recordings and animated images. They’re all still in your library (FAQ).

What if I want to delete them?

Use Screen captures in PicWay’s Tidy: swipe to move between screenshots and swipe up to set aside the ones you don’t need. Nothing is deleted until you confirm with iOS (how to clean up screenshots).
